CSLA: Consejos

CSLA Tips

Here are a few advice for WWII military enthusiast or an occasional players which have the feeling that the mod is too difficult:

1. All vehicles have stabilized guns. This means that the unit can fire on the move. Do not allow your units during the attack to stop or they will be quickly destroyed!

2. Western tanks have a fire control system that allows them, theoretically, to hit and destroy the target with the first shot and they can shoot across larger distances. In addition thanks to better optics they have the ability to sight your tanks much earlier.

3. Suicide is if you try to create a compact defence line of entrenched T-55/72 tanks in open terrain. The best defence is an attack. If you will, try to attack Leopard 2 MBT's with T-55 or BVP-1.

4. The IFV BVP-1 looks like a tank, but it isn't a tank! :) - it has a weak armour which provide the protection only to the 12.7 mm calibre. The standard Soviet tactic is to use large tank formations to break through enemy lines. Tanks should be accompanied by infantry and the infantry should be supported by BVPs in the last line.

Welcome to the hell of modern warfare!

CSLA: Historical Background

This story is based on true events. In 1982 a Soviet Proton rocket carrying a KOSMOS-1382 satellite was orbiting 35,890 kilometres above the equator. The satellite was tasked to monitor missile silos in the United States and to trigger an early warning in the event of a launch.

When the spy satellite detects the heat radiation emitted from a missile booster rocket the information is instantly transmitted to a super computer, named M-10, with a capacity of ten million computations per second.

This computer would calculate the missile type, its orbit, its speed as well as the location and estimated time of impact. M-10 was located at the Serpukhov-15 military installation south of Moscow.

As the United States had possessed a similar system for several years all training and testing was done routinely but, for unknown reasons, all training stopped at some point.

On the night of September 25 - 26, 1983, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, one of the most promising officers in his class, began his duty. Everything proceeded as normal until the red button marked "Start" began to blink. Sirens wailed loudly and the computer reported a multiple missile launch. At the same time the spy satellite KOSMOS-1382 announced another, and then another, launch - all originating from the United States.

The computer system alerted all military units to take up a state of operational readiness. In several minutes all Soviet missile installations were ready and waiting for the order to attack. By that time however, Petrov had noticed that the missiles reported as being launched were lacking the distinctive funnel-shaped tail of fire and he instantly decides to cancel the alert.

It is certain that, if it was not for Petrovs' actions, then an Armageddon would have been unleashed on the world.

Mod Scenario

My story take place in the second half of 1980s. The Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union is the reformist Mikhail Gorbachev. East-west relations have become warmer and fears of a possible nuclear war slowly diminish. But, nobody would anticipate the event which would trigger the worst disaster in human history.

One fine day all sirens in a secret military installation south of Moscow begin to wail loudly. A system error initiates a training program intended to be used in the event of war, but nobody knows that it is only a training program. The OKO spy satellite system reports multiple US missile launches. In a second the system signals a general military alert and all military units move up to a level of operational readiness.

Intercontinental ballistic missiles are prepared for launch and all Warsaw Pact military units leave their barracks as part of standard precautions to be taken in the event of an imminent nuclear attack. These actions are of course observed and reported by NATO whose member nations take similar measures.

This time nobody notices that it is only a training program that has been initiated and within 10 minutes of the first false launch alert all Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles are airborne. Within seconds thousands of warheads are on their way to targets in Europe, the United States and other countries across the world.

After several minutes the first R-36M/SS-18 SATAN missiles, the most powerful intercontinental ballistic missiles ever built, are separating their warheads and hitting American cities. Similar events take place in the east as a NATO counterattack takes effect.

In the course of a few seconds a large percentage of the world's population is annihilated. Each NATO and Warsaw Pact country receives several few hundred nuclear strikes - enough to ensure the complete destruction of all large cities, military bases and military-industrial centres.

Now the real war begins.

Despite the NATO and Warsaw Pact armies being reduced to around 20-30 percent of their original size they prepare to fight a conventional war. Many of the soldiers have lost their families and homes and have nothing left to lose. Everything they loved or owned has gone and their hearts are full of hate and revenge.
